On 1 July 1863, slavery was abolished in Suriname. The date, now known as Emancipation Day, marks a monumental occasion for African people in Suriname, the Dutch Antilles and the Netherlands. Freedom.

Today we celebrate the freedom of our ancestors. So we curated some of our favorite tweets from those reporting from the ground.

Let’s just keep in mind that the struggle continues because freedom doesn’t come so easy.
