When I started my family history research, I was shocked that I could find so much information about my ancestors. And perhaps even more shocking, there were some incredible stories in my family that hadn’t been passed down.
In 2010 I made a video to document some of the early stages of my research. And I thought I’d share some of my favorite research flashbacks. Here’s a brief clip from when I first got to know my 2nd great grandfather, Thomas Warren Long, who escaped from slavery, fought in the Civil War, and was elected to the Florida state senate.
Creating opportunities to share this type of excitement with students when they discover something new about their ancestors is a big motivation for Ancestors unKnown. Reflecting on these discoveries helps to keep the motivation fresh!
What are some of your favorite research memories?
